Clarence E. Burroughs, 79, of Bellefontaine, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 2017, at Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center surrounded by his family.
He was born May 21, 1938, in North Lewisburg, the son of William Clark and Elizabeth Huffman Burroughs and was a retired firefighter with the Lima Fire Department.
His survivors include his wife, Barbara Eubanks Burroughs, whom he married Dec. 13, 1959; daughter, Nancy (Wayne) Steinberger; son, David (Teresa) Burroughs; grandchildren, Erica (Justin) Cluck, Daniel (Lisa) Burroughs, Adam (Anna) Steinberger and Kasondra (Chris) Postle; and great-grandchildren, Daniel Jr., Emery Mae, Joseph West, Eden Grace and Hayden Rose.
You often could find Clarence enjoying a conversation about the current events and politics while enjoying a cup of coffee at the local McDonald’s. He was an avid lover of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Cincinnati Reds, NASCAR, Pinewood Derby race cars, and all types of animals.
His neighbors knew him as the man who would walk his late dog, Sparky, up and down his road. Later on, he enjoyed walking the neighborhood dogs, simply because he adored spending time with them. Other parts of the community knew him as the man who helped the local Cub Scout den with their Pinewood Derby cars and races. He looked forward to building the fastest cars he could. Over the years, he even perfected his craft, and started the annual Pinewood Derby at Bellefontaine First Family where he attended.
Friends and family would all agree, if you knew of Clarence, you knew he was a die-hard Republican. It didn’ t matter if you knew him for 50 years or five minutes, you knew. Oftentimes he would gladly tell you his opinion on many topics that most would shy away from. But Clarence always delivered his opinion with love and passion.
As a retired firefighter with the Lima Fire Department, he spent his retirement loving on his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He valued going to church, and relished listening to his favorite hymns. He attended both Bellefontaine First Family and Gretna Brethren Church. He was a giver, a friend, a neighbor, a firefighter and a Marine. He was loved by all who knew him and will be missed by so many.
Calling is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 22, at Jennings Farley Funeral Home, where a celebration of life service begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, with Pastor Daniel Burroughs officiating. Burial is in Maple Grove Cemetery, North Lewisburg.
