Joseph Kielman, 35, of Bellefontaine, was charged Wednesday evening with criminal trespass, theft, receiving stolen property and resisting arrest and a felony count of a probation violation related to the theft of a generator reported from a rural Bellefontaine residence.
Wednesday morning, deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to 4290 County Road 11 to speak with the resident about the theft.
The resident told deputies that she had received an alert on her cell phone that morning about 4:45 a.m. from a motion-activated security camera on the front of her home.
From the surveillance footage, she was able to view a person pulling a generator from the driveway toward the road. She said her fiancé owned the generator.
Then, she said at 6:15 a.m., she observed two people wearing dark-colored clothing walking from the road toward her house. She said she addressed the people through the speaker on the camera, stating she was “going to call the sheriff.”
While deputies were at the home, they also were approached by a neighbor, who told deputies he had observed a blue van with a trailer parked at the property about 4:45 a.m. He provided a detailed description of the vehicle, noting that the trailer contained firewood.
Deputies also were are to lift two different shoe prints from the mud on the property.
Later that day about 8:35 a.m., deputies on patrol in the area of south Main Street at Ingalls Avenue in Bellefontaine observed a blue van and with a trailer attached to it.
The van was registered to Kielman, and deputies noted he had an active warrant out of Auglaize County.
Inside the trailer, deputies observed a generator matching the description of the stolen generator in plain view, along with firewood.
Deputies said Kielman was located in a nearby residence, but after deputies were permitted inside by a female resident, he left the home out of a bedroom window.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department also responded and the defendant was apprehended in the area of south Detroit Street and Lake Avenue, where he was found hiding in the bed of a pickup.
He was lodged in the Logan County Jail.
