Cooking chili for the Logan County Fair is becoming a family affair.

This year, three members of the Armentrout family of Zanesfield edged out the father-son duo of Sam and Maison Johnson, to take home prizes in the annual Chili Cook-off contest on Saturday morning.
Scott Armentrout and his 15-year-old son Landon teamed up to create a spicy chili called the “Five Alarm Fire” after the father’s volunteer service with the Tri-Valley Fire Department. They used a variety of chilis, including a habañero to create the heat, Landon said, and also added a barbecue sauce for flavor.
They took the victory over Sam Johnson, a regular in the fair baking and cooking contests, who said he added a spicy twist to the recipe his son 14-year-old Maison entered in the mild category, which had won awards in prior years, but this year took a back seat to a tried-and-true champion recipe.
Ann Fischer said her mild chili has won the category several times in previous years before she took a two-year hiatus.
“This is just a regular old mild chili I’ve entered many times over the years,” she said.
