Bellefontaine senior Amy Fulmer is headed back to the state finals of the Division II swim meet in two events.
The Chieftain star qualified second in both the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke during the prelims Thursday at C.T. Branin Natatorium Thursday in Canton.
“I am thrilled for Amy to be hitting her best times this week,” said BHS head coach Sharon Lewis. “She is ready for these finals and I am excited to see her enjoy this last day on the high school state stage.” Fulmer won her heat of the 100 freestyle in a time of 50.01, which broke her own school record. She is seeded behind
Mariemont’s Cora Dupre, who had the fastest time of 49.14 on Thursday.
Fulmer also won her heat of the 100 backstroke with a school-record time of 54.56. She is seeded second behind Cincinnati Seven Hills’ Emma Shuppert, who had a prelim time of 54.32.
The Chieftain star is hoping to have a similar finish as she did at the state meet last year when she took second in the 100 freestyle and third in the 100 backstroke.
The Chieftains also had two relays compete in the preliminaries Thursday. The 200 medley relay of Fulmer, Sarah Starkey, Abby Kite and Shelby Starkey finished 23rd with the second-fastest time in school history of 1:54.28. The 200 freestyle relay consisting of the same group finished 24th with a time of 1:43.49.
“I am extremely proud of these girls,” said Lewis.
“Advancing to state is an outstanding accomplishment and to stay within their top times is even better. They worked hard and earned a place among the best in the state.”
