Charles Kerns, 98, of Belle Center, passed away Saturday morning, March 25, 2017, at his home.
He was born in 1919 to the late Donald and Alcie Allen Kerns. Chuck married the former Maxine Pickering on Aug. 18, 1940; she preceded him in death in February 2004. He was also preceded in death by a son, Jeffery Kerns; and three brothers, Donald, Sidney and Gene Kerns.
Chuck was active in sports and graduated from Belle Center High School. He was manager of the Belle Center Water Department for 20 years. He then worked as a machinist at Rockwell in Kenton until his retirement in 1980. He was an avid outdoorsman, expert gardener and legendary storyteller. Chuck dearly loved his children and grandchildren and faithfully supported them in all their sporting events and academics. He was a member of the Belle Center United Presbyterian Church.
Chuck is survived by his sons, Jerry (Marilyn) Kerns of Nashville, Ind., and Rodney (Linda) Kerns of West Liberty; daughter-in-law, Linda Kerns of Bellefontaine; nine grandchildren, Valerie Elliott, Andy (Katy) Kerns, Katrina (Eric) Regula, Aricka (Ryan) Johnson, Maggie (Jeff) Smith, David (Heather) Kerns, Laura (Drew) Castle, Michael Kerns and Jennie Kerns; 18 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; a special friend, Rosalyn Rinehart of Bellefontaine; and his caregiver, Jami Nance and her daughter, Lauren.
Friends and family will gather at noon, Saturday, April 1, at the Memorial Building in Belle Center and celebrate by sharing stories of Chuck’s many April Fool’s Day pranks and other adventures.
