It’s more than handcuffs for city police

Police calls usually involve people in distress wanting to report a crime. But a call Tuesday evening from an elderly couple was different — they just wanted guidance on how to get their heat turned back on.
Mounting electrical bills of more than $500 led to a shut off of services to their southend home and outside temperatures in the 30s quickly dropped the home’s interior temperature.
Bellefontaine Police Officer Jerrod Hostetler was officer in charge for the second shift that day and responded to the call.
When he arrived, the wife told him she returned home from work at a fast food restaurant and found her husband, who is blind, shivering in the cold, dark home. “I decided to send out a text message to the rest of the shift to see if we wanted to help out and pay to get their electricity back on,” Hostetler said. “They all responded, ‘Yes,’ without hesitation.”
