The University of Mt. Union has gained a lot of notoriety for the high level of success it has achieved on the football field. A local athlete hopes to help the Purple Raiders’ baseball program earn similar respect.
WISNER |
Bellefontaine senior Lane Wisner recently decided to accept an opportunity to play for the NCAA Division III school, which is located in Alliance.
“I really liked their coaches,” said Wisner, who also considered Ohio State-Lima, Earlham and Slippery Rock. “Their coaches really want to bring the baseball program to the same level as the football program, and I want to be part of that.”
It will take a while for the baseball version of the Purple Raiders to do what the football team has — Mt. Union has won 12 national championships on the gridiron — but Wisner is excited to be part of a school with such a high standard of excellence in athletics and academics.
U.S. News & World Report ranks Mt. Union eighth in its list of the top colleges in the Midwest.
“My first goal is to make sure I am taking care of my business on the academic side,” said Wisner. “I am going to have an associate’s degree from Clark State by the time I start at Mt. Union, so I want to keep my grades up and do well in all of my classes. My GPA at Bellefontaine is around 3.7 or 3.8, and I would like to maintain that in college.”
