Dave Crissman has spent a career learning live saving techniques as a firefighter and paramedic with the Bellefontaine Fire and EMS Department.
On Sept. 26, he became the recipient when his fellow firefighters responded to his city home and revived him after he suffered a cardiac event.
He and the department say an advanced piece of equipment — an AutoPulse — played a key role in his survival.
“They (paramedics) wouldn’t have been able to continue chest compressions and get me down the stairs without it,” he said last week. “They would’ve had to stop.
“Once you start compression, the longer you can keep them going the better.”
Chief Andy Fissel explained Tuesday to the Bellefontaine City Council that the AutoPulse has a backboard and a strap to go around a victim’s chest.
Once on, paramedics start the machine and it automatically begins and maintains compressing the patient’s chest.
