Neither the grand or reserve market chicken winners had ever won a contest before.
NIKITA SCHIEFLE & JARRETT MONROE
Neither had even showed an animal larger than a guinea pig, actually.
“It’s really exciting and encouraging to win your first time,” 16-year-old Nikita Schiefle said of her first real experience in the show arena — an experience that earned her not only the grand champion meat pen honors but also the top senior showman award.
Although she has grown up around cattle and ducks on her grandfather’s farm, this was her first agricultural effort having joined the Indian Lake FFA program just last year.
That was pretty much the same story for her 17-year-old classmate Jarrett Monroe of Lakeview, although he did have a bit of experience showing guinea pigs as a youngster.
“It was my first time and my first real show,” he said after winning the reserve champion rosette.
