A retired teacher who spends his spare time cutting paths at the Myeerah Nature Preserve and a woman who was like a fairy godmother to children who grew up around Harmon Field Park were recognized during Tuesday’s regular meeting of the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District.
Brian Garver, right, was recognized as the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District’s Volunteer of the Year for his work to identify, cut and maintain hiking trails — including the three-mile outer loop trail — at the Myeerah Nature Preserve. The board honored Brian Garver with the annual Volunteer of the Year Award for his work over the past several years helping develop the nature preserve’s trail system, which now includes a three-mile outer loop.
“I don’t really deserve appreciation but I do appreciate it,” Garver told the board after being presented with a plaque and shown a statue on which his name will be engraved along with past recipients.
“I had fun doing it. I didn’t do it for recognition; I did it for the people of Bellefontaine, the people of Logan County and the people of the state of Ohio who come from all over to enjoy Myeerah.”
Former Parks Superintendent Biff Roberts also made his first appearance at a parks board meeting in many years to ask the board to help him honor a dedicated part-time parks supervisor who passed away in the past year.
