Norma Jean Shields Detterer, 71, of Bellefontaine, passed away Thursday morning, Dec. 15, 2016, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus.
Norma was born in Bellefontaine on July 31, 1945, to the late Albert and Juanita Parker Shields. She was also preceded in death by her first husband, Tommy L. Taylor, whom she was married to from 1964 to1980; her second husband, James H. Detterer, whom she married Oct. 3, 1980, in Knoxville, Tenn., and who died Feb. 22, 2005; a brother Robert Shields; an infant sister, Wilda Shields; and four great-stepgrandchildren.
Norma was a 1963 graduate of Belle Center High School. She worked at Sears & Roebuck, and later in sales and marketing with Acosta where she retired after many years. Norma was a past exalted ruler of Elks Lodge 132, Bellefontaine, where she was also the manager for several years. Norma was also a member of the Harold Kerr Post 173 American Legion and the First Church of God, Bellefontaine.
She enjoyed watching The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Bengals.
Norma is survived by her daughters, Tonya L. Taylor (Warren “Jay”) Blair of Bellefontaine and Angela (David) Hall of Bellefontaine; a brother, Donald (Sue) Shields of Bellefontaine; grandchildren, Tiffanie (Kyle) Davis, Kelsie Blair, Lindsey Hall, Nicholas Hall and Zack Hall; several nieces and nephews; a step-daughter, Lisa (Mike) Leonard of Van Wert; step-sons, James H. (Danielle) Detterer Jr. of Ashley and Joshua H. (Jackie) Detterer of Holly Hill, S.C.; eight stepgrandchildren; 17 step-great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Dennis Jenkins of Bellefontaine.
Calling is from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20, at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, Bellefontaine, where Pastor Gary Brown officiates a funeral service beginning at 6 p.m. Burial is at a later date in Highland Memorial Cemetery, West Liberty.
