Board votes to seek dedicated clerk-fiscal officer during marathon meeting
In an abrupt about-face, the Indian Lake EMS has reinstated two first responders laid off about eight weeks ago.
Assistant chief Adam Niederkohr and Shelby Clem returned to work Monday.
EMS district board of directors voted in a regular meeting last Wednesday to bring back the two employees they first voted to lay off in June.
Chief Joanna Pittenger confirmed the rehires by phone Monday, but would not discuss the reasoning for bringing them back. She directed those, and any other questions to board president Greg Iiams, who did not return a total of four requests for comment made Monday and early today.
Mr. Iiams and Chief Pittenger said in June the layoffs were business decisions motivated by a decrease in calls for service.
The EMS chief said at the time the EMS had responded to 106 fewer calls for service this year than last. Also defending the layoffs at the conclusion of a June 29 special meeting, the board president reiterated the decrease in call volume and said, “it’s not like we can go out and push old people into traffic to increase our calls for service.”
