Bellefontaine Middle School students and staff placed more than 540 flags honoring local veterans Wednesday afternoon for the Veterans Day Field of Honor, which continues at Blue Jacket Park for nearly a week.
Each flag showcases the name of a veteran or active service member and their branch in the military.
The names were submitted by students, staff, and family members this fall.
The project was a collaborative effort, with the Bellefontaine Joint Recreation District putting together the grid for the flags, which are on the high school soccer practice field.
The joint recreation district is also providing lighting over the flags each night.
Belle Printing printed the names of each veteran or active service member.
Flags were donated by the PTO and Logan County Veterans Services.
The first field of honor was last year at Blue Jacket Park.
“It is our way to honor our veterans since we are unable to have an in-person ceremony because of COVID,” BMS Principal Lynda Holycross said. “I cannot thank veterans enough. To me, this is just one small way of giving back.”
