Velma Irene Headings Plank King, 95, of West Liberty, passed away at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, 2016, at her home.
Velma “Grandma Plank” was born in Logan County on March 28, 1920, to the late Ezra and Nellie Mohr Headings. She also was preceded in death by her first husband, Robert L. Plank Sr.; her brother, Floyd Headings; her second husband, Herman King; and sisters-in-law, Lydia Elizabeth “Libby” Geil and Sarah Jeanette Hostetler.
Velma was a graduate of DeGraff High School and married Robert on June 4, 1944. She was a loving and proud homemaker and mother of Rebecca Smith Tretola, Robert L. (Joann) Plank Jr., Samuel Joe Plank and Ann (John) Thornburg. She also is survived by grandchildren, Karl James Smith, Christy (Jeremy) Kauffman, Geoff (Amanda) Smith, Juanita (Steve) Byler, Robert L. (Rena) Plank III, Julie (Eric) Yoder, Jennifer Lynn Plank, Emily (Adam) Cole, John Robert Thornburg and Christopher (Kylee) Thornburg; great-grandchildren, Madeline, Seth and Sophia Kauffman, Alexa, Ally and Annabelle Smith, Austin, Derek and Kristyn Byler, Sophia, Ethan and Elizabeth Plank, Lily and Wyatt Yoder and Katelyn, Ava, Lucy, Emma and Taylor Cole; stepchildren, Dale (Stewart) King, Rosemary King and Steve (Teresa) King; stepgrandchildren, Scott (Lynn) and Rodney Nunemachers and Amanda (Ryan) Osborn and Seth King; great-stepgrandchildren, Jack and Paul Osborn and Madison Nunemachers; and in-laws, Mary Kathryn King, Marjorie Headings, and Sam and Mary Lou Plank.
A homemaker, Velma was a member of Bethel Mennonite Church, where she spent many years arranging the altar flowers. Her home was always open to cook and enjoy time with family and friends. The family is very thankful for the wonderful care that was given Velma at Green Hills Daybreak, and by her sitter and friend, Lydia Kerns.
A funeral to celebrate Velma’s life is at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 29, at Bethel Mennonite Church, 416 Washington St., West Liberty, where visitation is one hour prior. Burial is in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty.
