Emily Jones, a 2010 Benjamin Logan High School alumni, recently talked via the Internet with the advanced psychology and advanced placement government students at her alma mater, sharing her experiences after graduating.
After high school, Emily graduated from Heidelberg University, studied a semester in Washington, D.C., at American University and then became the official “Tweeter” for the Jordanian Embassy. Currently, Emily is working with the Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs.
During her travels to the Middle East, Emily visited the refugees that were in Syria and Turkey and then visited the Syrian Embassy in Jordan. This experience allowed her to see that what the government was saying did not match her conversations with a Syrian refugee family she met while in Turkey.
By sharing her experience, the students were able to see a different view of what is going on in the region.
Emily also studied at the University of Oxford in England. She told students that most Ohio colleges and universities have this opportunity available, but they must be their own advocate at college. She also answered questions about college both applying and what to expect.
Because Emily lives in New Hampshire, she has already had the opportunity to vote in the 2016 presidential primary and because the candidates were vigorously campaigning in her state, she was able to share a different side of the political race for president than the students will see in Ohio because more candidates were still in the race.
She told the students how the candidates and pollsters flooded into New Hampshire to see how people were responding at the university.
