The Volunteer Tree Steward Program was announced Thursday afternoon as Bellefontaine Shade Tree Commission chairwoman Shelley Moore and volunteer Cathy Dinovo accepted a $500 Community Connections Round-Up grant provided by the Logan County Electric Cooperative to help support the program.
The group of 12 Logan County residents will work together later this year and in coming years to develop a citywide tree inventory and maintain the overall health of Bellefontaine’s urban forest.
“This will help immensely to get the program off the ground and get the training done in the first year,” Ms. Moore said. “Our first goal is to get everybody trained, but my main goal for 2016 is to get a citywide street-by-street inventory done.
“We also want to teach people how to plant trees. We can stop paying high dollar for new trees if we can plant them ourselves and maintain them.”
