No longer having to split carries with Mike Weber, J.K. Dobbins is thriving as Ohio State’s numberone tailback this season.
With 654 yards through five games, Dobbins ranks third nationally in rushing. He is averaging an impressive 7.1 yards per carry.
He is coming off one of the best performances of his career, rushing for 177 yards on 24 carries in the Buckeyes’ 48-7 rout of Nebraska.
Dobbins also reached a personal milestone in the win, eclipsing 3,000 career rushing yards. He became just the 11th running back in OSU history to rush for at least 3,000 yards.
“It’s a blessing to accomplish that milestone,” said Dobbins after Saturday’s game. “I worked hard and I’m going to keep working hard so I can get to 4,000.”
With at least eight games remaining this season (seven regular-season contests and a bowl game), Dobbins already sits at 10th on the Buckeyes’ career rushing list with 3,110 yards.
Dobbins’ career has been a roller coaster. It started on a high. In his first game as a true freshman in 2017, he rolled up 181 yards against Indiana and looked like a sure-fire future star. Dobbins finished his freshman campaign with 1,403 yards and averaged 7.2 yards per carry. He was named a freshman All-American and earned secondteam all-Big 10 honors.
