Robert D. Sparks, 57, of Cincinnati, was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead after the tractor-trailer he was driving northbound on U.S. Route 68 crested a hill and struck the rear of a line of vehicles stopped waiting for a motorist to make a left turn onto County Road 37.
The tractor-trailer first struck the rear of a sport utility vehicle driven by Peggy J. Gunnett, 58, of Bellefontaine, which was forced forward into the rear of a minivan driven by Trenna L. Cupps, 50, of Zanesfield, which struck the rear of the lead pickup truck driven by Crosby A. Hites, 26, of Kenton. The Gunnett vehicle was also forced slightly left of center and struck a southbound pickup truck driven by Jane M. Donahue, 55, of Independence.
Ms. Gunnett and two passengers in her vehicle, Micah J. Lawrence, 39, of Bellefontaine, and Isabell Gunnett, 8, were taken to Mary Rutan Hospital by Bellefontaine and Huntsville squads. Cupps and Donohue were treated at the scene by paramedics with the Huntsville EMS.
Damage to the vehicles was moderate to disabling, deputies report.
