West Liberty-Salem Schools student Marley Young said the youth baking contest Wednesday was “a little nerve-wracking.”

“I had butterflies in my stomach while I was watching the judging,” the 9-year-old cake baker said. “But then, I couldn’t believe it when they called my name as the winner.”
The third-grader won the grand champion cake title for her chocolate cake with chocolate icing and patriotic sprinkles. She received some advice and assistance for her entry from her grandmother, Shirley Haymes of West Liberty, who was at the competition Wednesday.
“I love cooking for family and friends, and I used to cater,” Haymes said. “I’m happy to pass along my cooking genes to my granddaughter.”
