Indian Lake High School math teacher Amber Shively is starting off the second semester of the 2019-20 school year by offering up some age-old advice.
Once again, Shively has displayed her “Take What You Need, Give What You Can Wall” just outside her classroom, but this year there is a twist.
The messages on the Post-it notes were all written by residents of local nursing homes. Shively worked with activity directors at facilities in Huntsville, Lima, West Liberty, Van Wert and Wapakoneta to gather the sage advice.
“I was trying to think of a way to change it up a bit when I saw an article online of a nursing home taking back to school pictures of their residents. I knew right away that I wanted to do something with senior citizens… So far I have over 8,000 years worth of wisdom on the Post-its, with more still coming in.”
Students may simply read the advice on the wall or take a Post-it to keep if it is a message that speaks to them. They are also encouraged to add a positive message if they would like.
The Post-its currently include all kinds of life lessons such as:
“Be good and don’t do anything you shouldn’t do,” Audrey, age 104.
“Don’t let anyone put you down,” Tots, age 100.
“Always be kind to others,” Jenny, age 90.
“Enjoy your studies and take advantage of what is available,” Jean, age 89; and
“Put your phone away and talk to people,” Marge, age 86.
In the past, Shively displayed her “Take What You Need, Give What You Can Wall” with messages from Indian Lake Elementary students. She explains it is an ongoing effort to offer encouragement because many high school students have a lot to worry about.
In addition, the messages support and highlight positive behaviors from all students.
