William Lowell Whitaker, 81, died Sunday, May 21, at Wood Glen Alzheimers Community in Dayton.
He was born Aug. 29,1935, on his family farm outside of Huntsville to Martha and Kenneth Scheurman. He was later adopted by his grandparents, Hazel and William J. Whitaker.
On Aug. 10,1958, he married Elaine Kleczkowski in Baltimore, Md., and she preceded him in death in 2010.
He served in the U.S. Army as an explosive ordnance disposal specialist stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood in Missouri and Ft. George Meade in Maryland.
He was a lifelong farmer and also worked several years as a truck driver at Huntsville Grain Elevator, Ohio Ready Mix, Beard Oil Company and Ryder Trucking. In his earlier years, he also would break horses. He was a member of the Charles Collins American Legion Post 381, Huntsville and the Indian Lake Moose Lodge 1533.
He was a motor sports and motorcycle enthusiast.
He is survived by his three children, Cindy (Jamie) Harter of Grand Rapids, Bill (Debi) Whitaker of Middletown and Rosanna Henry of Zanesfield; grandchildren, Brooke (Jason) Klaus, Josh Harter, Nathan (Jane) Henry, Jennifer (Tom) Garst, Cory (Timea) Whitaker, Seth Henry, Jonah Harter, Daniel Whitaker, Timmy (Andee) Lewis, Joey (Danielle Blair) Lewis, Megan (Justin) Esmael, Tom (Gabrielle) Alig and Addison (Brianne) Alig; great-grandchildren, Blake, Noah, Hazel, William, Landen, Joseph, Morgan, Deliah, Luci, McKenna, Kaleigha and Kinzlee; and a sister, Louise of Mansfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Dick.
Funeral services are 1 p.m. Friday, May 26, at Shoffstall Funeral Home North Chapel, 115 N. Main St., Lakeview, with visitation from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Burial is in Huntsville Cemetery.
