The Bellefontaine Moose Club and Kiwanis Club recently purchased the Amtryke and presented it to Mike on his 17th birthday. Mike took off on a spin in the hallways of the Logan County Board of DD offices with his mother, April Garvey, his physical therapist, Wendy Evans, and many others watching.
Because of the recent warm weather, he’s been able to take it outside a bit as well.
“It’s pretty fast and it makes me feel good to ride it,” Mike said.
Mike suffers from a traumatic brain injury that leaves him unable to use his right hand. As a part of the Students With Disabilities class through the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center housed at Indian Lake High School, Mike has had access to an identical Amtryke.
Instructors there say Mike uses it frequently for physical therapy purposes, but he says riding it is recreational, too.
“It is awesome. I’m so thankful for my own bike because it makes me feel normal.”
Mike’s Amtryke is equipped with special handlebars to help him steer, plus a basket and specialized pedals. Its worth is estimated at around $1,200.
