The police chief in West Liberty soon will have keys to the building expected to be the new police headquarters by the end of 2017.
Council members learned Monday in a regular meeting the building at 111 Runkle St. is now officially vacant, and Police Chief Shane Oelker and the rest of council can begin the work of drawing floor plans, and having the structure professionally inspected and surveyed.
Council has negotiated for several months over the sale of the building, as first reported in the Sept. 13 Examiner. An ordinance formalizing council’s intention to purchase the building was approved Oct. 6, as first reported by the Examiner. Lowell Buck, the owner of the building, attended Monday’s meeting and informed council his commercial tenant, Jerry Van Horn, officially had vacated the property effective late Monday afternoon.
Now that the building is empty, council has 60 days to get the building inspected, to draw up floor plans for the new police department and to line up all necessary financing for the project.
