Motorists and a passenger in a two-vehicle crash Thursday avoided serious injuries even as one vehicle was pushed 200 yards from the crash scene at Plumvalley Street and Troy Road by raging creek waters. Austin Mustaine, 22, of Bellefontaine, was cited for driving under suspension and a stop sign violation in the 3:20 p.m. crash. Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department report he claimed the brakes failed on his van leading him to drive from Plumvalley into the path of a northbound sport utility vehicle operated by Jane L. Baker, 71, of Springfield. The van continued west off the roadway and into the creek. Mustaine was able to get himself and Krista P. Lyon, 20, of Bellefontaine, out of the van and to safety. Damage was heavy to the vehicles. The Bellefontaine Fire & EMS Department and the Mac-O-Chee EMS responded to the scene. There were minor injuries reported. (EXAMINER PHOTO | NATE SMITH)
