Wanda S. Shumaker, 93, of West Liberty, passed away at 9:07 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, 2018, in her home at Green Hills Inn in West Liberty.
She was born Jan. 26, 1924, on a farm near West Liberty, the oldest of four children born to William Howard and Anna S. King Shumaker.
Wanda will be lovingly remembered by her brother. William Howard “Bill” (Eleanor) Shumaker; a sister, Jeanette (Kenneth) Hostetler; six nieces and one nephew; as well as many great- nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her, mother, Anna s. King Shumaker in 1976; her father, William Howard Shumaker in 1993; a nephew, Neil Hostetler in 1998; and a sister, Annabelle Hostetler in 2014.
Wanda taught elementary school in Berlin, Ind., Urbana Local and West Liberty-Salem for 31 years before retiring. In the early years of her teaching career, she spent summers in Goshen, Ind., earning her bachelor’s degree in education from Goshen College. After retiring from teaching in 1977, Wanda worked as housekeeping supervisor at Green Hills Care Center. She held this position for 12 years before fully retiring.
Throughout her life, she also enjoyed traveling, maintaining her home and yard in immaculate condition and, until recently, she was an active gardener. Wanda was a life-long member of Bethel Mennonite Church and will be remembered for her wonderfully themed and decorated bulletin boards. She was also an avid Ohio State sports fan and made a point of following the news and politics.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to all the staff at Green Hills Inn and Universal Health Hospice for their attentiveness and loving care.
The family will greet friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 101 Zanesfield Road, West Liberty. Funeral services begin at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 29, at Bethel Mennonite Church, 416 Washington St., West Liberty. A private committal service will take place in Fairview Cemetery in West Liberty at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Wanda’s name to The Brotherhood Fund at Bethel Mennonite Church, 416 Washington St., West Liberty, OH 43357 to be dispersed for local needs.
