Virgil Eugene Simmons, 94, formerly of Rushsylvania, passed away Friday morning, December 31, 2021, at Ayden Healthcare of Belle Springs.
Virgil was born in Massillon, Ohio, on December 22, 1927, to the late Hally H. and Alice Celestine (Mann) Simmons. He was also preceded in death by his wife of 73 years, Helen Louise (Sloan) Simmons, and siblings Nelson Simmons, Gerald Simmons, and Ruth Simmons.
Virgil is survived by sons Larry Simmons of Bellefontaine, and Bob Simmons of Rushsylvania; three grandchildren: Lisa (Scott) Engle, Kari (Andrew) Blankenbeker, and Matthew (Steph) Simmons; a step-grandchild: Christopher Engle; and five great-grandchildren: Jocelynn, Baileigh, McKinley, Piper, and Charlee; and a sister W. Irene Garman of West Liberty.
Virgil was a member of the Rushsylvania United Methodist Church. He worked as a machine operator for 25 years at Roberts Screw. Virgil had also worked on the railroad and did carpentry work. He had a strong work ethic and rarely, if ever, missed a day of work. Virgil enjoyed bowling, golfing, and helping other people. Camping trips with family and friends were routine events and treasured by all.
A private family graveside service will be held in Rushsylvania Cemetery.
