“This is to remember all of us who served our country for no reason,” U.S. Army specialist 4th class and Vietnam war veteran Harley James told community members Saturday morning. “Let it never happen to another generation.”
April 2, local citizens joined area veterans outside the Logan County Courthouse in Bellefontaine to honor one of our own. Robert Walker MC’d the ceremony on behalf of American Legion Harold Kerr Post #173.
“Harley has asked me to let all of those present know he is here today accepting this honor and appreciation on behalf of his fellow veterans who gave the ultimate sacrifice,” Walker told those in attendance. “Also, Harley would like to recognize the equestrian programs that have been established to help veterans with PTSD.”
James is a firm believer in the healing benefits of being around horses when it comes to the effects of post-traumatic stress. After his time in the military, James raised, trained and competed on quarter horses for 40 years.
As part of Saturday’s ceremony, James received a certificate of honor from the American Legion along with an American flag that had flown over the nation’s Capitol, the Ohio Statehouse and the Logan County Courthouse. Post #173 and Honor Guard members Russ Strayer and Dave Allison were among those who participated—Strayer presented the flag and Allison served as the bugler.
Walker finished the ceremony by reciting a poem titled “A Hero’s Welcome,” which concluded:
“You have not failed your brothers
You clearly gave it all
And through your selfless actions
Others will hear the call.
“So take your place of honor
Among those who have gone before
And know you will be remembered
For now and evermore.”
