May yard sale planned
Preparation for the second Logan County Veterans to DC trip continues with strong early interest from veterans.
Organizer Scott Stewart said nearly two dozen applications have been received for the Sept. 15-17 trip and dozens more have been handed out.
Veterans who served during World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War eras are eligible for an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., to visit Arlington National Cemetery and the national monuments to the wars.
Volunteers and veterans’ companions who go along pay $250 to cover the costs of the trip.
Expenses are covered by fundraising efforts, Mr. Stewart said, and there is a strong base of support in Logan County for the project.
Veterans to DC is covered as a nonprofit project through Doyle Miller AMVETS Post 39 in Lakeview.
Mr. Stewart said a solid group of volunteers continues to move preparations forward, but there is need for more volunteers, especially as the group enters a period of fundraising projects.
People interested in serving as a volunteer or veterans considering taking the trip can learn more about the project at 7 p.m. Thursday during a meeting at the Logan County Solid Waste Management District offices at 1100 S. Detroit St.
Upcoming fundraisers include a chicken dinner from 5 to 8 p.m. March 25 at the Harold Kerr American Legion Post 173, 120 Colton Ave., Bellefontaine.
For $10, diners will get a three-piece chicken dinner with mashed potatoes and gravy, a roll, pie and choice of lemonade, tea or coffee. There will be a cash bar and a 50/50 drawing.
On May 13, the Logan County Fairgrounds will host the group’s yard sale and scrap metal collection and the Logan County TNR for its vendor fair.
Mr. Stewart said the Veterans to DC group is currently collecting donated items for a yard sale with the proceeds going to the trip. It will feature normal yard sale items such as good condition, clean clothing; working appliances; cookware; sporting goods; books; and bicycles.
Leftover items will be donated to charitable causes.
He also said people can donate scrap metal to the cause which he will deliver to D&J Scrap Metal. Again, money from the scrap will go to the project.
Call (937) 407-6766 to contact Mr. Stewart. He has available storage space and can make arrangements to receive sale items or scrap metal up to the event.
Volunteers will need time to organize the items for sale, he noted, so early drop-offs of items is appreciated.
Roni Lile is organizing the TNR vendor sale.
She said the group is hoping to have craft wares, doll clothing and bake good vendors in the Grange and 4-H buildings.
They are renting spaces for $50 a spot.
TNR is working to capture feral cats in Bellefontaine and Logan County; spay or neuter the cats; and return them to their cat colonies.
Research shows it is an effective way to control and reduce feral cat populations.
The group is a 501 (C) 3 nonprofit that relies on donations.
Any vendors interested in renting a spot can reach her at [email protected].
