Approximately 80 veterans — including at least two who served during World War II — attended Benjamin Logan High School student government’s annual Veterans Day breakfast and ceremony Thursday.
The local veterans had the opportunity to introduce themselves and say where they are from or something about themselves leading up to the featured guest speaker, Carmen Scott, who served in the U.S. Army Signal Corp during the Vietnam War.
Senior Gretchen Wilber welcomed the veterans, students, staff and guests by sharing the history of Armistice Day. To begin the ceremony, “The Star-Spangled Banner” led by Michael Dove was performed by the high school choir. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by the class presidents.
The fourth grade music class led by Tyler Young performed “This is My Country” followed by the reading of special letters written by 8th grade students Olivia Achor and Miah Defibaugh.
Benjamin Logan High School teacher and veteran Rob Painter simulated the folding of the American Flag during the ceremony.
The high school band led by Myles Bowers played the “Armed Forces Salute.”
Student Elliott Bailey explained the significance of Taps and the BLHS band ended the ceremony by playing Taps in honor of this special day.
Breakfast was prepared by students enrolled in the Principles of Foods class. These students are members of the FCCLA.
Student government leaders and their adviser, Megan Hastings, organized the events of the day.
Attendees Jim and Luann Culp wrote to the Examiner about the school ceremony, noting the flags lining the walkways, thoughtful presentations and delicious breakfast served.
“It was heart-warming to see the patriotism being taught to our students,” the couple said. “We appreciate the efforts made to honor our veterans.”
