Rachel A. Asselin, 22, of St. Paris, was flown by CareFlight helicopter to Miami Valley Hospital for injuries sustained after she was struck by a vehicle Sunday morning near a residence at 11950 Township Road 76, Quincy.
The driver in the crash, Travis L. Harshbarger, 24, of 1390 Township Road 31, Bellefontaine, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs and aggravated vehicular assault after the incident about 5:30 a.m.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the address in reference to an injury crash. When they arrived, they found that Ms. Asselin was lying in the grass, surrounded by other individuals who had been attending a party at the residence.
She was treated at the scene by Quincy Fire and EMS personnel, and then was flown to the Dayton area hospital.
During their investigation, deputies learned that Mr. Harshbarger was attempting to leave the party in a vehicle and said he did not see Ms. Asselin, who was standing outside in the dark. She reportedly was struck by his vehicle.
Other partygoers ran alongside Mr. Harshbarger’s vehicle and alerted him that he had struck Ms. Asselin, so he returned to the residence. Deputies observed signs of intoxication, but the suspect refused to take field sobriety tests or a breath test. He was transported to the Logan County Jail.
Also while tending to Ms. Asselin, deputies report a partygoer refused to back away from the scene after repeated requests. Nicole D. Shaffer, 29, of Dayton, was charged with obstructing official business and was lodged in the jail.
