The United Way of Logan County is throwing its weight behind one of the largest problems affecting local individuals and families with its single largest grant to date.
The charitable organization awarded $26,150 to the Community Coalition for Opiate Relief Efforts to fund five strategies to combat the local opiate epidemic, United Way Director Dave Bezusko announced prior to CORE’s team leaders’ meeting on Thursday afternoon.
Locally, there have been 49 documented overdose cases — 10 of which have resulted in deaths — in the first four months of this year, compared to 46 in all of 2016, Bezusko reported
“The opioid epidemic is truly a concern for our community and this program is going to provide valuable support for families and individuals to help them in battling addiction,” said Heather O’Donnell, United Way Board President. “CORE is a phenomenal group of people coming together to fight one major problem. We couldn’t ask for a better group of people to be in our corner working for us in this area.”
