Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department are investigating a report of an overnight theft of merchandise from Wal-Mart, 2281 S. U.S. Route 68.
According to reports, officers on patrol about 11:55 p.m. Tuesday observed a rear fire door to the business opened and merchandise scattered on the ground.
A review of security footage showed a male and female suspect had each filled a shopping cart of assorted merchandise before leaving the rear fire exit without paying for the items. Upon fleeing the store, footage shows the male and female suspects loading a vehicle with merchandise and fleeing the premises.
Officers are investigating the theft with the assistance of the store’s asset protection team. Investigation continues.
Driver arrested for OVI
Gerry L. Kerr, 52, of Huntsville, was arrested for operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and cited for driving left of center and failure to use a turn signal after an 11:15 p.m. Saturday traffic stop n U.S. Route 33 west of U.S. Route 68.
An officer on patrol saw the vehicle driving erratically through downtown Bellefontaine and almost striking the pedestrian crosswalk sign on Main Street at Court Avenue. He followed the driver northbound while checking the vehicle registration.
He completed field sobriety tests and a breath test taken at the police department returned a blood alcohol content of 0.05, which is below the legal limit for impairment.
He was charged with OVI and he and a passenger were allowed to leave with a sober driver.
