About 18 years ago, Forrest “Woody” Amidon and Kris Swisher penned a play called As the Windmill Turns.
Only in their highest hopes could they imagine that play would set in motion a movement to restore the historic Holland Theatre that has only grown in momentum and strength.
The co-authors were among those honored during the annual Windmill Awards ceremony Tuesday evening.
The event still pays tribute to that first play performed in a cold, dark theater that bore no real resemblance to today’s auditorium and stage in the heart of a structurally sound building with modern lighting and sound that has been reclaimed from the dilapidated multi-plex that was in jeopardy of being torn down in the late 1990s.
“Serendipity is a magical word. It is defined as ‘luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for,’” Mrs. Swisher said as she introduced Mr. Amidon as the recipient of the annual Lifetime Achievement Award.
“This fellow was magically the grandfather of one of the eighth-graders who were responsible for starting the movement to save the Holland, and he helped me write the first play, As the Windmill Turns.”
Just after Mr. Amidon’s recognition for his own contributions to local theater which span the past 50 years, Holland board member Christine Tillman took the stage to hand out a new honor.
