Three teens were charged in connection with break-ins and the theft of a city vehicle over the weekend.
Detectives of the Bellefontaine Police Department reported Wednesday that Dartanian Irwin, 17, of 1141 Michigan St., was charged with two counts of breaking and entering, theft of a motor vehicle, safecracking and vandalism, while Ethan Shoffner, 16, of 1132 N. Township Road 31, and Elijah Leeper, 15, of 314 N. Park St., each was charged with three counts of breaking and entering and one count each of safecracking.
The trio reportedly went to the area of Mary Rutan Park late Saturday, where they attempted to break into the Hoffman Municipal Swimming Pool and a maintenance building at the park, detectives report.
Detectives believe Dartanian tampered with the coin device of the soda vending machine before taking a pickup truck owned by the parks department.
He was involved in a crash near the intersection of John Street and Township Road 218 at about midnight, but the other boys were not in the vehicle. Troopers of the Ohio State Highway Patrol handled the crash, but an incident report was not available.
In the early morning hours Sunday, Wendy’s, 700 S. Main St., was also broken into and miscellaneous items were taken and an attempt was made to break into the safe. Detectives believe Elijah and Ethan were responsible for that incident.
