After a long winter that lasted well into April, local farmers and producers had a beautiful morning to kick off the Logan County Farmer’s Market season on Saturday.
With a miniature shopping cart filled with a dozen farm fresh eggs, a swamp white oak sapling and other items, 5-year-old Griffin Burkhardt rushes off to greet a friend at the Logan County Farmers’ Market as his mother Lauren and sister Charlotte talk to a family member. ALSO IN MONDAY’S EXAMINER: Lisa Engle, incentives coordinator, gets Power of Produce tokens for 5-year-old Rowen Daring, with mustache, as his sister Bexley, 4, front and father Trey Daring and other patrons wait Saturday morning at the Logan County Farmers’ Market. AND: New paintings including this farmer adorn the shed of the parking lot on the northeast corner of Detroit Street and Chillicothe Avenue.
“New this year for the first week — warm weather!” Karla Kauffman, the new manager of the market said. “And I guess I’m new, too.”
Kauffman was hired last year and began learning the ropes under former market manager Chloe Manor, who quit to pursue other interests.
Helping Kauffman manage the market is Lisa Engle, the incentives coordinator, who gets to hand out Power of Produce tokens to a steady stream of children age 5 and older eager to pick out some produce that interests them. She also helps manage the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and other programs, Kauffman said.
As far as vendors go, the market manager said customers can expect to see “nearly everyone who was here last year.”
