Ohio once again will be in the center of a presidential election storm this year as Cleveland hosts the Republican National Convention and the state’s voters again will play a pivotal role in the general election, Ohio Republican Chairman Matt Borges said today.
Speaking as part of the Logan County Chamber of Commerce monthly legislative meeting, Mr. Borges said he expects professional protesters, including Europeans, will descend on Cleveland in order to disrupt the convention which is 33 days away.
Sometime in September, the city will host the first debate of the general election, he said.
“I expect that debate will be the most viewed televised event ever,” Mr. Borges, a 20-year political veteran, said. “There is a lot of interest nationally and internationally in this election.
“It’s been more than 70 years since Ohio last hosted a convention. That’s amazing considering only one candidate has won the presidency without winning Ohio, and no Republican has won the White House without carrying Ohio.
“We’re in the middle of it all,” he said.
