Tigers stay unbeaten after knocking off cross county rival
West Liberty-Salem’s boys soccer team picked up its 10th win of the season Saturday after holding off visiting Benjamin Logan 1-0 in a local non-league battle.
The Tigers are now 10-0-1 on the season. The win also makes the senior class the winningest class in school history with 50 victories. The Raiders fall to 4-4-2.
Jack Eggleston scored the lone goal for WL-Salem in the first half off an assist from Ethan Cole. The Tiger defense held off the Raiders in the second half to preserve the win.
Defensively for WL-Salem, Logan Saylor and Logan Campbell combined for the shutout in goal. They each had one save.
“We played much better tonight than we had earlier in the week,” said BL head coach Jamie Hughes. “We got back to possessing the ball and it being a little more valuable, so that part of the game I was proud of.
“We just need to figure out a way now to get some goals out of it. That’s the next step to becoming a great team. I’m excited though as we continue to grow as a team and a program.”
WL-Salem travels to Fairbanks on Tuesday for an Ohio Heritage Conference game. Ben Logan travels to London on Monday for a Central Buckeye Conference contest.
Troy downs Bellefontaine
Bellefontaine’s boys soccer team came up short against visiting Troy 4-2 on Saturday in a non-league loss.
The Chieftains fall to 5-4-1 on the season, while the Trojans improve to 7-2-1.
Individual stats for Bellefontaine were not available.
Bellefontaine hosts Graham today for a Central Buckeye Conference contest.
Calvary Christian gets win
Calvary Christian’s soccer team dropped visiting DePaul Cristo Rey 5-2 on Saturday during a non-league game at Calvary Fields.
The Spartans improve their record to 6-2-1 on the season.
Calvary Christian came out firing with two goals in the first six minutes from Garrett Reinhard and Gabe Salmonowicz. DePaul Cristo Rey came back to score two goals and tie the game 2-2 at halftime.
In the second half, Salmonowicz scored for Calvary to make it a 3-2 lead. Reinhard scored off an assist from Caleb King, while Adeline Fearon added a goal after an assist from Salmonowicz. That gave the Spartans a 5-2 cushion and DePaul Cristo Rey could not make a comeback.
Defensively for the Spartans, Josh Harmison made 19 saves in goal.
Note: In Tuesday’s Examiner, it was reported that Calvary Christian avenged a loss to Liberty Christian in last year’s state semifinals. The Spartans had actually defeated Liberty Christian on their way to a third OCSAA state title.
Calvary Christian hosts Spring Valley today for a conference game.
GIRLS SOCCER
WL-Salem ties Columbus Academy
West Liberty-Salem’s girls soccer team battled host Columbus Academy to a scoreless tie on Saturday in a non-league game.
The Tigers area now 3-4-2 on the season.
Defensively for WL-Salem, Delaney Wade recorded 10 saves in goal.
In junior varsity action, Columbus Academy edged WL-Salem 1-0. Amanda Domachowski made seven saves in goal for the Tigers.
WL-Salem hosts Lehman Catholic on Tuesday for a non-league game.
