The vehicle operated by Dane Rike pulled out of a private business on the south side of State Route 47 and headed east in the westbound lane of traffic where he struck Officer Robbins’ car, causing several air bags to deploy and serious damage to both vehicles.
Officer Robbins and Duke received minor injuries.
Mr. Rike was evaluated at the scene by Sidney Fire Department and refused all medical treatment. He was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence, obstructing justice and resisting arrest, and made an initial appearance in Sidney Municipal Court on Monday.
Police Chief Will Balling said this year alone, 13 officers have been killed in traffic related accidents. “This was a very serious accident and reminds us how important it is to be careful while patrolling and doing our sworn duty. I am very thankful that all of the parties involved were not seriously injured.”
