URBANA — A “shelter in place” alert issued to students at Urbana University shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday was lifted within 20 minutes following clearance given by officers of the Urbana Police Department.
University officials reportedly were alerted to a report of a shot fired and notified all students, staff and faculty to shelter in place.
Officers responded and an “all clear” message was sent out 20 minutes later.
“Urbana University takes care and caution when it comes to the safety of the student community,” reads a statement issued Tuesday by university officials.
“(M)ass notification communications systems utilized at Urbana University provided for phone, text and email notification to provide the University community with timely notification of emergency events that may present an immediate threat to the campus community.”
Officers are currently reviewing security footage from the campus, and are actively investigating.
