The new 9 mm Glock 17 handguns will replace the department’s .40-caliber Smith & Wesson M&P sidearms that are about eight to 10 years old, Chief Deputy Chris Prickett said.
“We’ve had some mechanical issues with our firearms since we first got them and some flat won’t fire anymore,” Prickett said. “Our firearms guys did some testing and decided the 9 mm was the best option.”
The $16,347 purchase price through Vance’s Shooter Supplies in Columbus includes new holsters for the 45 guns and trade-in value for the old weapons.
“We were just trying to get updates on our handguns and we would like to start looking at updates to our long guns sometime soon,” Prickett said.
Commissioner John Bayliss said the commissioners decided to fund the purchase after a grant request filed by the sheriff’s office did not materialize.
The commissioners also approved a nearly $246,585 bid to replace the roof at the Logan County Jail.
The roof, which has been on the building since it was constructed in 2000, was damaged in a storm earlier this year and the county’s insurance agency has agreed to pay $112,798 toward the repair while the county will fund the remaining $133,686, Bayliss said.
“The roof needs a lot of repairs,” Prickett said of the jail project. “We have tires stacked up in spots up there and buckets all around the building. It was a 20-year roof and we got 20 years out of it.”
The project is expected to start later this spring.
