Shady Bowl Speedway conducted a “Non-Winners Night” on Saturday to give drivers who had yet to win a feature the opportunity to do so.
Feature winners from previous features this season were not eligible to compete.
In the late models feature, former track champion Bud Perry led the first three laps before a rash of crashes. Donnie Hill took over the lead on the restart and held it for the win. Kenny George Jr., Perry, Buddy Townsend and Curt Frazier rounded out the top five. Hill was the fast qualifier for the class, Mahaffey took the dash win, with Tyler Marsh winning the heat.
The modified cars took to the track next. Buddy Townsend got off to a fast start before giving way to fast qualifier Daniel McPherson on lap 18. McPherson stayed out front for the win. Townsend took second, Jerry Stapleton was third, Logan McPherson was fourth and Scott Jones finished fifth. Jones was the dash winner and Rob Bryant won the heat race.
For the street stocks, veteran driver Terry Purtee took the early lead. He went on to lead the first 11 laps before Jamie Sites moved in front. Sites led the rest of the way for the win. Dash winner Jacob Heckman took second, fast qualifier Chad Small II was third. Purtee won the heat race and was fourth in the feature and Jason Drummond took fifth.
Chad Brandyberry followed with a feature win in the thunder cars. Jake Moody let the first three laps. Dylan Pippin then took over the lead and held the lead until Brandyberry sped by on his way to the checkered flag. Bob Coppock was second, Pippin third, Steve Fowler fourth and John Hicks fifth. Brandyberry also was fast qualifier.
A new class was added to the schedule with the pro powder puff race for female drivers. Melissa McElfresh led the early laps before giving way to DeGraff driver Aliza Snapp. Snapp went on to get the win, with McElfresh second, Holi Eaton third, Brooklyn Wilcox fourth and Andrea Swink fifth. Chelsea Purtee was the fast qualifier.
In the compacts feature, action was halted several times because of crashes. Casey Wynn led the first 10 laps and then Corey Plunkett jumped in front. Plunkett stayed in the lead to get the victory. Wynn was second, Tony Heath was third, Jimmy Huffman fourth and Kenny George fifth. Chelsea Purtee set quick time and Plunkett won the dash. Heat wins went to Jeremiah English, Carlos Williams and Rodney George Jr.
Shady Bowl will again host racing Saturday with the third annual Clunker Classic. It will feature a 300-lap enduro race, skid plate races, flag pole racing, a chain race, burnout contest and trailer race. Racing begins at 5 p.m.
