West Liberty-Salem is employing uniformed law enforcement this year for the purpose of enhancing school safety.
In a regular meeting Tuesday the school board approved Champaign County Sheriff’s deputy Brad Jarzab as a school resource officer for the 2017-18 school year.
The Examiner first reported the district’s intention to hire a deputy from the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office Aug. 28.
The district has budgeted $45,000 to pay the deputy’s salary, but will also apply for applicable grant funding to offset the cost, Superintendent Kraig Hissong said.
In addition to regular safety patrols of hallways and around the campus, the deputy will help inform student safety protocols to make those drills or procedures safer and more efficient for pupils and staff, administrators said.
Board members were also updated on recent “school report card” data released from the Ohio Department of Education which assigns WL-S an A rating in student progress and a C rating in student achievement.
“The progress component looks closely at the growth that all students are making based on their past performances,” and “achievement represents the number of students who passed the state tests and how well they performed on them,” according to information from ODE.
