Children eligible for $175 for clothes, $45 for shoes
Families getting ready to send their children back to school once again will be able to apply for clothing and shoe assistance.
The Logan County Department of Job and Family Services today began distribution of applications for the annual countywide back to school clothing program that awards vouchers for $175 per child for clothes and $45 per child for shoes for up to 1,800 children.
Eligibility for the program is for families at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level with children attending school outside the home in any grade kindergarten through 12 or children receiving public assistance benefits through the agency, JFS Director Susan Bailey-Evans said.
This year, however, a partnership with community nonprofit organizations is allowing the effort to provide shoes for every child who qualifies.
“We are very pleased to be able to partner with Dave Bezusko of The United Way and Deborah Ellis with Warm Clothes for Kids program in offering a voucher for shoes from Sensation Station,” Ms. Bailey-Evans said. “This partnership was formed during this program last year and was a great success — we appreciate the opportunity to do this again this year.”
Families or children who are determined to be eligible for the program will receive a voucher for $175 per child from Job & Family Services, and a $45 voucher per child from Warm Clothes for Kids for shoes. Participating stores include Wal-Mart, Rue 21, Goody’s and JCPenney. Only those stores in Bellefontaine are participating and accepting the vouchers.
Applications are now available at Job and Family Services, Logan County Children’s Services and their outreach centers, Bellefontaine and DeGraff libraries, Union Station, the Logan County Health District, Discovery Center, Family and Children First Council, Lutheran Community Services thrift store and Our Daily Bread.
Applications will be accepted at the Logan County Department of Job & Family Services beginning Monday, June 27, through Friday, July 15.
Approval or denial letters will be sent to each applicant and vouchers for those approved for the program will be available for pick up from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 6, and 2 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9.
Shopping is to be done Aug. 12 through 28.
Funding is provided through unused Temporary Assistance for Needy Families money. The agency has enough money available to provide assistance for up to 1,800 individual children.
Children can be in receipt of benefits with their parents or with a caretaker who receives benefits for the children as a kinship placement.
