The Bellefontaine Exchange Club will conduct its 57th Annual Safety Town program starting in June. The first program took place in 1962 at the request of a parent whose son was killed while crossing the street.
Tim Notestine, Safety Town chairman and a graduate of the first Safety Town, said Safety Town provides instruction to preschool children in areas of pedestrian safety, traffic signals and signs, gun and fire safety, good and bad touching, not getting in cars with strangers and the hazards of drugs.
Instructors are trained officers from the Bellefontaine Police Department and Logan County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from township officers and Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers.
All sessions are at Mac-A-Cheek Learning Center (formerly Western Intermediate School), 1130 W. Sandusky Ave. Children should enter through the rear doors on the north side of the building.
Classes last approximately two hours with session starting at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Parents may attend sessions with their children as needed or desired and should inform the instructor of their intent when signing in their child each day.
The week-long program has the following start dates: June 4, June 11, June 18, June 25 and July 2 (no class on July 4).
The program is for all Logan County children who will be entering kindergarten in the fall and each child should receive an application when they register for kindergarten through the school they will be attending.
On the registration, please note any time or week when a child cannot attend so that the club can know the proper number of children throughout the weeks available.
Registrations should be mailed to Tim Notestine, c/o The Bellefontaine City Engineer’s Office, 135 N. Detroit St., Bellefontaine, OH 43311; faxed to (937) 592-0655; or emailed to [email protected].
