Rushsylvania is advising residents that lead measurements in the village water supply exceed the federal/state action level and they should take steps to avoid unnecessary exposure.
Lead typically enters the water as a result of corrosion of material containing lead, either in the water system or in household plumbing.
Allowing cold tap water to run for 30 seconds to two minutes, until it is noticeably colder, will flush out the lead. Residents also should only use cold tap water for drinking and preparing baby formula, the village reports.
Lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children.
Recent water sample revealed the village’s 90th percentile reading was 24.2 micrograms/liter. Whenever testing samples reach 15 micrograms/liter, a water supply system must take action to correct the issue.
Two samples out of 10 exceeded the federal/state levels. The village is collecting more samples to evaluate the system-wide levels.
Residents can have their homes tested by contacting MASI Laboratory at (614) 873-4654 or Alloway Laboratory at (740) 389-5991 for instruction.
