David J. Williams, 40, of Bellefontaine, was charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs as a result of a single-vehicle rollover crash about 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Deputies of the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the crash at north U.S. Route 68 at State Route 638 reference to a single vehicle rollover.
Upon arrival, deputies located a sport utility vehicle on its top, and the lone occupant/operator Williams advised he was not injured.
Preliminary investigation revealed Williams drove through the stop sign at the intersection and off the left side of U.S. 68, striking the ditch then a steel culvert. He continued to drive into the ditch until he struck a road sign and the vehicle overturned. Airbags were deployed.
While speaking with Williams, deputies observed his eyes were glassy, he was unsteady on his feet and he had a moderate odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his breath.
He refused to submit to standardized field sobriety tests and was transported to the Logan County Jail, where he also refused to take chemical breath tests.
Deputies said Williams had two prior OVI convictions in 2018 and 2014. He also was issued the following traffic citations: seat belt violation, driving under OVI suspension, failure to control, failure to reinstate license, no operator’s license and driving under a non-compliance suspension.
The defendant was released to a sober party. Huntsville Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.
