Robert W. “Butch” Munz, Jr., 73, of Huntsville passed away at his home, Thursday, Sept.14, 2017.
He was born Sept. 8, 1944, in Akron, a son of the late Robert W. and Hazel Heath Burns Munz.
He is survived by his wife, Billie J. Collum Munz, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage Aug. 26, 2017.
He is also survived by two daughters, Mindi Munz of Bellefontaine and Molli (Amy) Munz of Holt, Mich.; two grandchildren who were the light of his life, Maci Marie and Maverick Robert; a sister, Bonnie Vermillion of Galloway; sister-in-law, Carola Munz of Niceville, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
He also was preceded in death by his brother, Richard “Dick” Munz in 2010, and brother-in-law, Phil Vermillion in 2011.
Butch graduated from Bellefontaine High School in the class of 1962 and the class members just celebrated their 55th class reunion. He went to Wittenberg University, where he was co-captain of the Tiger football team and was a member of the wrestling team as a heavyweight. After graduation from Wittenberg, he joined the United States Air Force and was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, for four years, making two duty assignments to Vietnam and one to Libya. He ended his career as an Air Force captain to return to his hometown where he eventually went to work for Citizens Federal Savings & Loan Association, retiring after 30 years, alongside his childhood best friend, Chuck Earick.
Butch was a member of the Indian Lake Community Church and many other organizations including Bellefontaine Rotary Club for 30 years and for a number of years oversaw the Rotary chicken fry fundraiser. He served as president of the Bellefontaine High School Boosters Club, oversaw the 50-50 drawings at all home football and basketball games for many years and prided himself in the large amounts of money that were raised on those drawings. He was inducted into the Bellefontaine Athletic Hall of Fame and later was proud to have his daughter, Molli, also inducted.
Pastor Jim Ellington officiates a celebration of life service at 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 18, in the Indian Lake Community Church, Russells Point. Visitation is 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Eichholtz Daring & Sanford Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 321 N. Main St., Bellefontaine.
In lieu of flowers, the Munz family requests that memorial contributions be made to Citizens Federal Savings & Loan Association, P.O. Box 9, Bellefontaine, in Butch’s name for a scholarship for a BHS athlete at the end of this school year.
