Richard E. “Dick” Kerr, 89, of Bellefontaine, passed away at 12:22 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018, at Lima Memorial Hospital in Lima.
He was born in Union Township in Logan County to the late Harley Wilson and Clara Christina Kuntzman Kerr.
On May 12, 1950, Richard married the former Shirley Joanne Sprague at Stony Creek Church, and she preceded him in death May 2, 1971. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Beverly Diane Kerr; two sisters, Frances Linthicum and Martha Robison; and two brothers, James L. Kerr and John Kerr.
Richard is survived by his children, Marvin Kerr of DeGraff, Cheryl (Carl Jamison) Rayles of Quincy, Connie (Rick) Shultz of Bellefontaine, Keith Kerr of Columbus, Christy Peterson of Schwenksville, Pa., and Carol (Mark) Pait of Smithfield, Ky; his wife, the former Carol Ruth Frost, whom he married July 22, 1989; two stepchildren, Debra (Tim) Wilson of East Liberty and Daniel Yoder of Urbana; 15 grandchildren; and many stepgrandchildren and great-grandchildren.
After graduating from DeGraff High School in 1947, Dick worked for Tanger Farms, then Roby’s Garage in DeGraff, and later with Lafe Grube as an electrician. In 1964, Dick purchased Mr. Grube’s business and renamed it Kerr Electric & Appliance in DeGraff. He retired in April 2004.
A lifetime member of Stony Creek Church, Dick was a member of Gideons International. He was well known in the tri-county area as someone who could repair anything. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved watching his grandchildren’s activities.
He always put God first and it was not uncommon for him to share his faith with friends and customers.
Calling is from 2 to 4 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the Daring & Sanford Funeral Home, 210 W. Hayes St., DeGraff, where Pastor Wayne Downing officiates a funeral service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 11. Burial follows in Greenwood-Union Cemetery in DeGraff.
