ALSO IN SATURDAY’S EXAMINER: Concert band members, senior Mackenzie McManus, who playstrumpet, along with sophomore percussion member Kamryn Mathys and sophomore trumpet player Tomas Kennedy practice a tonal clapping rhythm by blowing into their cupped hands during the workshop. The visiting artists demonstrated “body music” rhythms created with a variety of clapping and dance elements from around the world, including Indonesia, Morocco, Africa, Spain, South America and Central America, along with providing a history of body music among African Americans in the U.S. that influenced the founding of jazz music. The Oakland, Calif., musical duo with backgrounds in jazz and world music, Appalachian banjo and step dancing also provided a free workshop with LoCo Art Friday afternoon at the Holland Theatre, followed by an evening concert at the theater.
