A 24-year-old Bellefontaine woman reported Thursday she fell victim to a scam.
She reports receiving a call in which the scammer claimed to be working with tech support for cellular phones and informed her to call another number to remove a software virus from her phone.
She was instructed to purchase gift cards as part of system test with the assurance refunds would be directed to her bank account.
In all, the victim lost $1,400.
Officers of the Bellefontaine Police Department noted in the report there are number of active technology scams ongoing in the area.
Drivers cited in crashes
David A. Clem, 39, of Quincy, was cited for improper passing after two-vehicle crash Wednesday in the 100 block of north Main Street.
He was northbound in a car at 8:20 p.m. and passed another vehicle. His car collided with a southbound car operated by Robert S. Herring, 26, of Quincy, who was turning left into a parking lot.
Damage was moderate.
• America Stewart, 17, of Bellefontaine, was cited Thursday for running a red light.
A photo of the crash at east Sandusky Avenue and Madriver Street appeared in Friday’s Examiner.
Officers report she was eastbound on Sandusky Avenue at 2:05 p.m. and failed to stop for a red light at Madriver Street. The Stewart car collided with a tractor-trailer operated by Jason M. Sargent, 40, of Farmersville, who was turning westbound onto Sandusky.
Damage was heavy to the car and minor to the semi.
• Dorlean S. Guthrie, 87, of Bellefontaine, was cited for failure to maintain assured clear distance ahead after her southbound car hit the rear of another at 1:55 p.m. Thursday on Main Street at Water Avenue.
The other motorist was Madisyn Stratton, 20, of Bellefontaine. Damage was light.
